Headsets come in two basic variations; with a microphone, and without one. They both fall in more or less the same price range so people usually have a headset and a mic. On Windows 10, you can start using the headset by simply plugging it into the audio jack. You will be able to listen to all outgoing audio. The mic on the headset is going to be a different case though. It doesn’t always work. Here’s how you can configure a microphone headset on Windows 10.

Hardware

This post deals with systems that have a single audio jack. Older laptops and PCs came with a separate jack for the headset and the microphone. This was back when the hardware was also sold separately. This post deals with systems that have a single audio jack for headsets that are headphone and mic in one. This includes headsets and headphones that come with your phone.

Configure Microphone Headset

Normally, you shouldn’t have to do more than just connect your headset to your system to get the mic working but if that isn’t working, then try the following.

Connect your headset to your system. Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray, and select Sounds. Go to the Recording tab. If your headphone’s mic appears in the list of audio devices, right-click it and select Set as default device. Of course your headset’s mic may not show up in the Recording tab. The headset will appear in the Playback tab but its mic will not appear in the Recording tab in which case, you have a driver problem.

To fix the driver problem, open the Device Manager. Expand the Sound, video, and game controllers devices. Here, you need to look for your audio device. This is going to be your sound card and will have a name like High Definition Audio Device, or something similar. Right-click it and select Properties from the context menu. On the Properties window, go to the Driver tab. Click Update driver>Browser my compute for driver software>Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

In the list, look for and select the Realtek Audio driver. Install this driver and restart your system once it’s installed.

After your system restarts, connect your headphone or headset. If you see an on-screen prompt asking what type of headset you’ve connected, select the headset with microphone option. This is likely only something that happens on Dell laptops but you might get something similar on other systems.

Both your headphone and mic ought to work now. If the mic still doesn’t work, repeat the very first step described in this post i.e., set the mic as the default input device.

If Windows 10 fails to list Realtek audio drivers in the Device Manager, you will have to download and install them manually.

You’ve invested a lot of money into a pair of quality headphones with a built-in mic for your phone. Wouldn’t it be great if you could use it for gaming or VOIP calls on your desktop PC? Good news: You can.

The big obstacle to using your nice headphones or earbuds with a desktop PC is that most full-sized desktops separate headphone and microphone jacks, while phones and laptops combine them into a single 3.5mm port. So, you can either plug them into a desktop’s headphone audio-out port and listen or plug them into the microphone-in port and use them to speak—but, not both.

You can use Bluetooth if your headphones have them, but that connection is meant for mobile devices and isn’t really up to snuff regarding latency or quality. Luckily, high-end Bluetooth headphones generally have a line-in option that makes them wired for older gadgets and times when the battery dies. We suggest using it for any PC applications.

Fortunately, the solution to this problem is simple. If your PC doesn’t offer a combination in/out headphone jack, you can get a cheap adapter that splits the signal into two: the audio going to the drivers in your headphones and the audio coming from the microphone. Here’s one on Amazon for $6 for this exact situation.

Once you have your cable adapter, just plug your headphones into the female port and the male ports into the appropriate jacks on your computer. These are generally color-coded—pink for the microphone, green for the headphones or speakers—if they don’t have icons near the port. Next, choose the correct audio sources in Windows, and you’re good to go.

How to use a mobile headset microphone with a desktop pc - How to (7)

These adapters aren’t 100% guaranteed to work—there’s enough variation among mobile headphones that you might run into a pairing that’s incompatible. But they’re inexpensive enough that it’s not a big deal if you get unlucky. If you want something a little more reliable with some easy controls for volume and mute, you can get an inexpensive USB sound card. Some models, like this one, add the combined port your desktop is lacking.

It’s too bad that there’s not a software solution to this problem, but a few dollars for some extra hardware is a small price for being able to use your headphones (and their built-in mic) everywhere.

When you’re ready to listen to that important business presentation or audio file, you can connect a headset to your computer to listen to the files rather than using external speakers. Both desktop and laptop computers include the jacks, or small, round outlets, necessary to connect your headset. If your headset features two cylindrical plugs, one plug is for the headphones and the second plug is for the microphone. Your computer also includes USB ports as a possible alternative for connecting your headset. If the cable attached to your headset includes a USB plug, then it is a USB-enabled device and will fit in the USB port.

Standard Headset With Mic

Step 1

Locate the headphone and microphone connectors on your computer. These round sockets may be located at the top, front or back of your desktop, or the side or front of your laptop. The panel surrounding the sockets shows tiny symbols for the headphone and microphone.

Step 2

Examine the headset’s metal plugs for thin color bands: the headset plug displays green markings; the microphone plug displays pink markings. The black rubber or plastic part next to the metal plugs displays tiny symbols for the headset and microphone.

Step 3

Insert the green headphone plug into your computer’s headphone jack. Insert the pink mic plug into the microphone jack.

USB Cable

Step 1

Locate the USB port on the front, side or back of your computer. This connector features a rectangular slot approximately ½-inch long. A front or side port may offer easier access for connecting and disconnecting the headset.

Step 2

Insert the headset’s USB cable into the USB port. If the cable does not fit one way, rotate the cable plug 180 degrees and try to insert it again. Do not force the plug into the slot. If the slot is horizontal, the plug’s USB symbol displaying three wires should face up.

Step 3

Wait for your computer to install the headset drivers, if necessary. The confirmation notice will display on the screen.

So, You want to know how to use headphones as a mic?

Then you are in the right place. We’ll show you how you can effectively use a headphone as a microphone on your PC with detailed steps. So stay tuned till the end.

You want to use a headphone’s Mic for let’s voice recording or talk with someone on Skype or Discord.

And you may have seen many people use a headphone with a microphone as a mic. Let’s say on Youtube or Twitch, and they are doing it very effectively, and you can do it too.

The backstory behind the Mic and the Headphone is relatively simple. Both use the same techniques to work. A headphone uses its diaphragm in a controlled manner to produce vibrations that produce sound.

A Microphone works in a reverse pattern. It takes vibrations from a user as an input and converts them to electrical signals to produce digital sound.

This means you can also optimize your headphones or earphones to be used as a Microphone.

Now let’s jump into how you can do it effectively.

How to Test when Optimizing the Mic Sound

You can use Windows Voice Recorder to record sound and hear the results after every change you make.

You can also enable a feature Listen to the device in Microphone settings on the Listen tab. I usually don’t do that myself, but it’s just a personal preference.

Things to Keep in Mind while trying to use Headphones as a Mic

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when using headphones as a mic.

The purpose of Headphones is to produce sound. They can be used as a Mic; however, the capture quality of that Mic will not be as good as of a good Microphone.

The capture quality of a headphone used as a mic can also be deficient, so you’ll have to boost the volume up, or you’ll have to speak a little louder.

Also, this will not damage your Headphone anyways, so you don’t have to worry.

What is Microphone Boost

Microphone Boost is a setting in Windows audio settings. It helps you increase the volume of the sound captured from a Mic.

So if you think that the sound level captured in your Microphone is low, you can increase this level accordingly.

There is a detailed Guide about How Microphone Boost works here; you can check that out too.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would say that, Since I am a gamer from way back then. I’ve used low-quality headphones and Mic for almost 50% of my gaming journey.

And I’ve used these headphones as Mic for communicating with my teammates over Discord or In-game voice chats. I know it can get frustrating sometimes that you don’t want to spend too much on a High-end Headphone and Mic.

But hopefully, this guide will help you overcome this issue. If you have any feedback regarding this guide or any other articles, please let me know; I would appreciate it.

Note: Again, You have to play and find the best setting that suits your headphones.

I am not looking for information on VOIP.

I am not looking for information on Google Phone.

I am not looking for advice to buy a different phone.

This is not about using a particular application on my PC.

This is not about using a particular application on my android phone.

I’ve tried “make it louder” apps on my phone and they covered the full spectrum between “made it worse” to “had no effect at all.”

I’ve tried phone headsets and either I can’t hear who I’m talking to or they can’t hear me.

My phone sends sound output to and receives sound input from a 3.5mm jack.

My PC sends sound output to and receives sound input from a 3.5mm jack.

Surely there is a way to run the audio i/o from the phone through the PC so I can make use of the very good microphone and speakers/headphones I have.

That’s all I want, to connect my existing Alcatel Pixi Theater (model DALW5004) cell phone to my PC in a way that lets me use the PC’s microphone and speakers instead of the phone’s microphone and speaker.

The motherboard on my PC is a Gigabyte AB350 Gaming-3 Rev.1.

It feels as if it might be as simple as putting a splitter on a 3.5mm jack cable coming out of the phone and plugging the mic and speaker parts into their inverse counterparts on the motherboard (phone output to PC input, PC output to phone input), but I’m not confident enough about that to risk damaging my phone (If I could afford to replace the phone, I wouldn’t be making this post in the first place).

Is it asking too much to get an answer to the question I’m actually asking?
